Problem

The development of new materials is key to the green transition toward net-zero carbon emissions, but the current process is far too slow and costly. Furthermore, many critical processes occurring in the energy conversion and storage devices span multiple time and length scales, while the available predictive simulation options are limited to one scale. This discrepancy makes it difficult to accurately predict the materials’ behavior using simulations, contributing to the continued reliance on trial-and-error-based materials development processes in laboratories.

SOLUTION

PhaseTree’s technology solves these by problems using multi-scale simulation methods spanning all relevant time and length scales. The multi-scale simulation solution consists of four modules: density functional theory (DFT), cluster expansion, Monte Carlo and phase-field method. All of these methods are widely used in academia where students and researchers can invest a significant amount of time and effort to train themselves to become an expert or avid users.

KEY CUSTOMERS AND INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE

PhaseTree’s primary target group is battery materials producers, as well as battery manufacturers. They expect to expand their customer portfolio to incorporate academic and research institutions conducting research on batteries and power-to-X applications.

Team

Tejs Vegge (Professor at DTU) has been an internationally leading expert in clean energy materials for more than 20 years, working on accelerating the innovation and discovery process of clean energy materials. Jin Hyun Chang (Assistant professor at DTU) has been working on computational modelling of energy storage materials for 15 years. He is a pioneer in computational simulation method and software development. Jenna Kang is a serial entrepreneur with a background in front-end development, user interface (UI)/user experience (UX) design, as well as project management.

Unique selling point

PhaseTree offers a unique technological expertise that fills the unmet demand of the advanced materials field. Designing a first of its kind cloud-based solution with an intuitive interface that eliminates the need for domain experts is a huge leap towards penetrating into and accelerating the materials R&D market.

Asia Connection

Two of co-founders behind PhaseTree are Korean-Canadians, who are fluent in Korean, and have a extensive understanding of Asian culture. PhaseTree is looking for clients and funding from across the East Asian region.
