Problem

The food supply chain is inefficient, unreliable and environmentally toxic. Traditional agriculture consumes 70% of all water, emits 70% of all water pollution, wastes 40% of vegetables and releases 26% of all greenhouse gasses. With a world population expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, of which 68% will live in urban areas the situation will only deteriorate.

SOLUTION

Nextfood delivers a full farm technology stack to partners, and helps operate farms. Their proprietary platform integrates and automates the entire plant-based food supply chain from order through vertical farm production to delivery and invoice. Unlike outdoor agriculture’s industrial age commodity production, prone to market and weather risks, Nextfood’s production is predictable and demand-driven year-round.

Moreover, their farms are extremely efficient: the yield of a 1m² Nextfood farm is comparable to 200 m2 of an outdoor farm, requires 98% less water, saves more than 75% of fertilizer and uses zero pesticides.

Team

The Nextfood team combines a wide range of disciplines, including plant science, data science, agronomy, mechanics, automation, electronics, software, business and operations. The co-founders, Rasmus Bjerngaard, CEO, and Hannes Lindal, CTO, are seasoned tech entrepreneurs/ex-VC.
